BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — In response to the global COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, the Seneca Nation of Indians has announced it is shutting down all of its casinos.
The announcements includes three casinos in Western New York: Seneca Niagara Resort and Casino, Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino, and Seneca Allegany Resort and Casino.
“The COVID-19 outbreak is an unprecedented public safety situation that requires an unprecedented response,” said Seneca Nation President Rickey Armstrong, Sr. “Given the number of people who visit and work at our facilities, I believe it is in the best interest to suspend our gaming operations until further notice. We are keeping the health and safety of our workers, our guests and our communities above all else.”
The Seneca Nation of Indians is a federally recognized Seneca tribe based in western New York. They are one of three federally recognized Seneca entities in the United States, the others being the Tonawanda Band of Seneca (also in western New York) and the Seneca-Cayuga Nation of Oklahoma. Some Seneca also live with other Iroquois peoples on the Six Nations of the Grand River in Ontario. In 2002, the Seneca Nation signed a Gaming Compact with the State of New York under the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act to cooperate in the establishment of three “class III gaming” casino facilities, which included slot machines, table games and other amenities and offerings typical of Las Vegas style casinos.
Earlier Monday, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced all casinos in New York State would close at 8 p.m.
In addition to the temporary suspension of its gaming operations, President Armstrong announced various temporary closures of on-territory facilities and changes to identified services, effective immediately. Essential services, such as the elders’ meal program, health services and emergency services will continue, but may be adjusted to reduce unnecessary contact.
